National Opinion Survey of Crime and Justice, 1995: National Data

DESCRIPTION: The survey questions concern neighborhood atmosphere and presentation of crime in the media, worries regarding possible attacks--both robbery and physical attacks, confidence in and opinions of police and their effectiveness, problems dealing with courts, and attitudes regarding prisoners and prisons, drug laws, and drug problems, and juvenile gangs.  Other questions focus on attitudes concerning the death penalty, guns, and the availability of firearms.  Additional information expands on the respondent's sources of crime news and gang related questions are included.  Demographic information on respondents includes sex, age, race, income, education, and religion.

Population: Individual in the continental United States with a telephone in their residence.

Sampling: The survey employed a random sampling design.  The response rate from those sampled was 65%.

Sample Size = 1,005

Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities (Sample of Original Data Set)

DESCRIPTION:  The following data set is a sample of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Census.  This original survey (Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities 1997) provides nationally representative data on state prison inmates and sentenced federal inmates held in federally owned and operated facilities.  Through personal interviews from June -October 1997, inmates in both state and federal prisons provided information about their current offense and sentence, criminal history, family background, gang membership, and prison activities, programs, and services.  *Since this is only a sampled version of this data, some of these variables and characteristics may not be present (1000 cases and 237 variables).  The entire data set can be downloaded from ICPSR.  Click

DESCRIPTION: The following data set was created by using a convenience sampling technique where 145 students at a midwestern university were surveyed concerning their beliefs and practices relating to alcohol and drug use.  Also included in the survey were questions relating to demographics, college life, parental beliefs and practices concerning alcohol and drug use, attitudes about religion, questions about their relationship with their parents, their work history, and so on.  If you would like to download the specific survey that was distributed,
